Anannya Sen’s Review

Review Date: 17/7/08

Crash is back with a bang.

Crash Bandicoot games on mobile have become the equivalent of Mario Kart. Funny that when you consider that you have to race around in Karts and collect spinning question marks to give you items.

This is the 2008 version of the Crash series and the last one was a cracker too. You can read our review of it here. There are 2 versions of the game, a 3D one for Symbian devices and the 2D one for the good old java phones. I played the 2D one of my K800i.

The graphics are nice and big and full of colour. Character images and the karts are definitely in the mould of the Crash games. During the race the stages have a lot of individuality about them from the beach and desert stages to the ones in space. Animation is quite smooth and the skidding around the corners and movement of the karts are good. Sound is better than good with a variety of tunes, sound effects and vibration through the game.

Controls are simple, the kart autoaccelerates so you just have to worry about left, right and fire. Holding the turn button down will make Crash skid which you can identify by the accompanying sound effects. Whether this speeds you up around corners though, is something I never figured out. The main button or 5 will fire your weapon or use your item. The items are fairly standard for racing games and you may well recognise similarities to Mario Kart items.

The action itself is fast and frantic as the courses vary a fair bit. Some times you will be racing along treetops with just a small track to go on, and others you'll be flying through the air over big patches of water. The races are fairly short with 3 laps to establish and maintain your lead. Each race probably takes 3-4 minutes to finish.

The game gives you a lot of options with 5 different modes. To unlock the other modes you have to complete the various cups as well as collect the wumpas on arcade mode. This will give you access to a whole host of other characters, karts and even modes. The modes are pretty varied too, there are some interesting challenges in there which certainly add to the fun of playing.

Also the game isn't too easy. It certainly starts off easy, but the later levels and some of the challenges get quite hard so the learning curve is pitched just right. And there's an added fun element here, when you collect all the letters that spell CRASH, your kart turns into a monster truck with extreme speed and the ability to squash people!! Great fun.

Overall, this is probably the best karting game for mobiles out there, but what would have sealed the ice cold award instead of gold, would have been the option of a bluetooth battle with your mates. Then we would have some real extreme karting action!
