Anannya Sens Review
Crash is back and now he can jack!!
This review is long overdue so I must apologise. The reasons are numerous and not worth going into here. Suffice it to say, the game is worth the wait as it's a whole lot of fun.
Crash games have always been about simple and addictive gameplay and this one is no different. In fact, come to think of it, it is different, in that there's an added feature. Jacking. Well, it's actually hijacking, but the game calls it jacking for short. What this does, is basically allow you to take control of one of your enemies for a short period of time and ride them like a bucking bronco. They will attack anything they come into contact with and to get past certain obstacles you need to be riding certain enemies.
This definitely gives this great game a whole added feature as jacking some of the larger enemies and causing havoc is sometimes more fun than finishing the levels!
As with all Crash games you have to battle the evil Cortex twins and in this case rescue four ancient tribal masks. As you do, your powers increase and you will be able to perform more moves than before. Not that the moves you perform before weren't good to begin with, as Crash has the usual punching, kicking and spinning tricks that we have come to know and love. In fact, the game has a really neat tutorial mode which takes you through the moves by imitating shadows on the wall of a cave!
This is just one example of the really nice graphics the game has to offer. The look overall is very familiar but there is a decent level of detail and colour as well. In particular, the animation and element of speed is really well handled during the game, especially in the levels where Crash is surfing (no, not a typo) through the waves. Sound is great too.
The controls take a little getting used to, especially the jacking. This is not because they are hard, but because the jacking is so easy to do that you sometimes find yourself doing it even when you don't want to.
This can be a little annoying on levels where you have to get to the end before the time runs out, but what makes this game very playable is that there are a number of different level objectives. These range from completing it within the time, to defeating a set number of enemies, to just staying alive until the timer runs out. And there are end of level bosses too.
To top it all off, the game not only has 40 levels, with keys to collect to gain access to specific ones, but you get a rating at the end of each level. Knowing me, as you may do by now, this meant that even on the early levels I found myself replaying them until I got that gold medal. Well, it is a lot of fun to play so replaying wasn't too hard. And did I mention that you can upgrade your abilities through huts as well? No? Well you can.
In short Crash has it all and excels as an example of a really good piece of mobile gaming. Great graphics, very fun to play, true to the Crash mould and a lot of longevity mixed with a little originality. Highly recommended.
