Anannya Sen s Review
Gauntlet is a classic. It was good then, it's still good now. It may look a bit dated, but the gameplay and difficulty are just as good even now.
Ahhh, the good old days. When games had 16 colours, sound effects were like a casio keyboard and very few games could ever be clocked as they were that difficult.
Gauntlet was one of those games, a classic that anyone my age should remember fondly. And it is recreated faithfully here for your mobile phones.
Graphics are pretty average by today's standards, but in those days, they were state of the art! And the graphics have been recreated faithfully! Now it may not be to everyone's cup of tea, but I loved it.
The sound is the same as well. A little intro tune and then onto the cheesy sound effects when walking around and hacking and slashing. Great!
The playability couldn't be simpler. Walk around using the directional or key pad and use the centre button to fire. Potions can be used by pressing 0 and keys are used automatically. Just like the original.
The playability is still good. While there is not much to the game, there never needed to be. This game is about hacking and slashing. Moving around and killing your enemies. There's a choice of the 4 usual characters (warrior, elf, wizard and a valkyrie) with different weapons and each character has different speed and strength attributes. You have to move around and find the exit to the next level, collecting keys and potions while killing all your enemies around you. With your health ticking down and the hordes of monsters to fight, the game is hard! But you can continue where you left off and the game autosaves which is great. Not much thinking involved, but there is a lot of exploring to do to find the keys to get you out of there.
The lastability is pretty good as well, there are 25 levels to complete! Each level gets a little bigger and more complex. This is no quick 30 minute game, it should take you a good while to complete. So if you like this sort of hack and slash and you remember the original, take a trip down memory lane to see one of the grandaddies of the modern gaming era!
