Costas Stephanides’s Review

The most (legal) fun you can have with a camel.

Mr Goodliving are proud of their games and they should be. The Playman series has done very well in the last couple of years and is now a brand in its own right. The big G is trying to do the same with Turbo Camels. You may remember Turbo Camels - Racing and Racing Extreme and you would be forgiven for thinking that there wasn't much room for the brand to diversify.

It?????s true that camels are predominantly found in the desert but they do creep up in the circus and with that tenuous link we have Turbo Camels - Circus Extreme. This is not a racing game but a puzzle game... sort of. Actually, thinking about it, it's a strategy game... no upon reflection it's a platform/action game. You know what, we cannot categorise it, but what we do know is that it is great.

Gunther (the rider) and Baldwin (the camel) must make their living in the circus and what better way than to be fired out of a cannon to impress the crowd. The real aim of the game is to fly out of the cannon and collect as many items as possible and then land in the designated area. When we first saw the slide show we didn't have a clue what was going but this video should help it all make sense. If you are still unsure then go to for a demo.

You can control the angle and power of the cannon but the real skill is 'boosting'. Whenever you hit an object, your boost meter will increase; the harder you hit the object the bigger boost you will gain. Once in mid-air, press any of the outer keys to boost in that direction. Some of the levels have little trampolines that you should try and boost towards. There are all sorts of things in the circus and most of these will play a part at some time during the game. While the controls are ?????easy?????, you do have think pretty quickly on some levels and it?????s definitely a game for two thumbs on the key pad.

There has obviously been a lot of thought put into this game. The level designs start simple and end up as very, very intricate but best of all, the learning curve is pretty good. The game is split into three main areas; Circus, Zoo and Ghost Train (Ghost Train! - they must have some funky circuses in Finland) each with their own distinctive graphics and objects. There are 65 levels in total, so there's plenty to keep you busy. Levels are completed by collecting candy/pumpkins. At the start of the level you are told how many you need to collect to pass the level. Do the bare minimum to get a silver star. If you manage to collect all the items, you will receive a gold star and if manage to beat the high score, you'll get a little trophy. Don't expect to be able to get trophies straight away. Once you get the hang of the game you can go back and pick up the trophies with the greatest of ease. If you manage to get at least silver stars on all the levels, you will be given a website address where you can get free ringtones and wallpapers. More free stuff is available if you get all the golds or all the trophies. Here?????s a little hint for the trophies ????? all you need is a high score and to pass the silver requirement. You don?????t need to worry about finding the last item when you can bounce for 20 seconds to gain the high score. More hints here.

The graphics are pretty good, there're vivid colours and some good backgrounds. The animation of the camel is very weird. He's a big lump with gangly legs that have a mind of their own and you'll also see Gunther flying around like a nutter. There are loads of sound effects in the game although there was a slight jitter to the game when playing with the sound. At the end of the day, it is highly addictive. There are loads of different ways to complete a level and time will drift away as you try to figure out the right approach. If you like Nate Adams and FMX II then you should love this. Circus Extreme has a similar vibe to them and is extremely moreish. You probably won?????t progress too far if you limit your playing time to a few minutes here and there. Whether you want to or not, you will be playing for hours on end, rather than minutes.

And just for the record, all trophies/golds can be obtained - we have our Bumploma to prove it :-)
