Handset Symbian - All handsets

Costas Stephanides’s Review

A simple but addictive game - at least for a while

Tendbeyond are building a reputation for developing quick, one button Symbian game. X-Ray is slightly different and has retro written all over it.

There's no convoluted plot, just stay alive as long as possible. Two red lasers travel horizontally and vertically and if your spaceship touches one, then its game over. Simple, no extra lives, no upgrades just guide your ship and avoid the lasers.

Try and collect the diamonds to increase your score. As your score increases so does the game speed and it does get pretty frantic. After the 20th diamond a new icon will appear, collect it and the lasers will slow down for a bit. You do have to be quick because the icon will disappear after a few seconds. A shield can also appear which obviously shields you from the lasers for a time.

Controlling the ship is just a matter of pushing the direction you want to travel. 8 directions are possible, which you can use via the keypad but a standard joystick/D-pad works well and is less stressful. The ship's movement is very reminiscent of Asteroids and there is a slight fluid motion to your craft's movement.

The graphics are extremely basic, just a black background with a basic spaceship. Bit of a disappointment for a Symbian game. The sound is better with a nice tune but nothing to jump up and shout about.

At a base level, the game is frustratingly addictive, purely as the game is so simple and your demise is all down to your idiocy. If you enjoy berating yourself and always striving to improve your score then this is not a bad game. It's just that there's not that much there to entice me time after time.

It would have been great game a year or two ago but the bar has risen steeply since then.
