A great driving shoot em up (while it lasts)

Tank Racer does exactly what it says on the tin, you race tanks. I'm not talking about traditional slow moving tanks; these little babies are fast and have big guns.

The game is made up of a number of championships which range in difficulty and length. Each championship has about 4 races on different tracks. Unlike some of it predecessors all the tracks are unique and do not include reversed courses.

The graphics are good. Nice colours, detailed backgrounds. The race is played from a top view and you do get to see a lot of the track so no nasty corners are hiding. The tanks themselves are drawn pretty small but they do move quickly and are fairly agile.

What sets this apart from similar games is that you race against 5 other tanks. A lot of processing power should be needed to handle 6 moving vehicles but there is no slowdown and the developers deserve a pat on the back for their efforts. You can choose to race as any of the tanks and they each have slightly different attributes. I found the best all round tank was probably the red one. Onto the race itself.

Most races consist of 3-4 laps around a fairly short and easy course. This is not a game to hone your driving skills. Tank Racer is all about destruction. Your cannon may be used after the first corner and then the carnage can begin. The tank auto accelerates, just press 4, 6 to steer and 5 to fire. The shots loop like grenades and your opponent has to be quite far in front if you want a hit. When the inevitable does happen, the tank will start spinning on the spot for a few seconds and a lot of time is wasted regaining control. The cannonballs can actually help as a boost. If the shell lands just the right distance behind you, then the shockwave will accelerate you forward for a short while - very nice touch. If you have trouble using the cannon, then don??t worry. Extra weapons can be picked up from the crates that are placed around the course. Weapons include homing missiles (only work effectively in a straight line) and mines. Be careful with the mines. If you are close to one that your opponent sets off, you can still be sent spinning.

The races are very good fun and your final place determines your grid position for the race in the championship. My only bone of contention, is with there only being a few laps. If you get embroiled in a 4 tank pile up, yes it is great fun, but you will be hard pushed to make it into first place. Similarly, once you have a bit of a lead, it is very easy to Schumacher your home without any interference.

If winning is all that matters then you can always compete with yourself against your best course/championship times.
