Anannya Sen’s Review

A great little platform game which is fun to play and full of colour.

This is a slightly older game, but shows perfectly how good gameplay can stand the test of time.

The game premise is simple, you have to get to the end of dragon island, picking up fruit and finally defeat the dragon at the end to free your land!

The graphics are great, they are small, but very cute looking and full of colour. This is one of the game's strengths and they give the game a great feel. The animation is reasonable, although there is not much going on, just your basic movement, jumping and throwing. The baddies are nicely drawn and quite different too.

The sound is quite good, a nice Zelda style tune when you load the game up and also in the game itself. There are effects when you throw things and when you kill things as well as when you die. The sound is not superb, but then again, it doesn't have to be and suits the game well.

Controls are simple, use the D or key pad to move around, jump and climb up and down. Use the main button to fire your axe. Really basic platform controls. Easy to pick up and understand straight away.

The playability is pretty good. The objective is to get to the end of each level. You have an axe you can repeatedly throw and this gets powered up (ie you can throw more in one go) as you progress. There is plenty of fruit to collect but this just increases your score. Also, you can collect armour so that you have an extra 'life' in addition to the 3 lives you start off with. The game will have you jumping from land to land, over streams, trees and creatures while trying to axe the things coming at you. The enemies follow basic patterns but the levels can be drawn out. In that I mean it's not always easy to see what lies ahead and you have to be cautious so sometimes you have to play a level a few times to see what the best route is. You also bump into some amusing characters along the way.

I'll be honest in that I have no idea how many levels there are and so the lastability may be great but then again it may not be. I got several levels into the game and found that you can save your progress as well as have 5 slots for different games (which can be overwritten and deleted). You start with 3 lives but unfortunately when you die you go back to the start of the level. This makes the game pretty challenging but if you're a platform game addict, you'll love it.
