A well designed licensed game with large levels and plenty of Blade weapons

I have to confess that I haven't seen the latest Blade movie but I did love the first two films. I'm not sure how the plot in the game matches up to the film plot.

As Blade you hunt around the city chasing after Drake. I wont give any spoilers but there are two human helpers who help guide you on your way. There are about 5 or 6 levels and they each take about 5 minutes to complete. Each level is designed as a huge labyrinth of corridors/passageways. Locked doors block your passage and can only be unlocked by either the main computer or by killing all the vampires in the area.

The graphics are good, the angled overhead view works well although Blade looks like he has put a bit of weight on. The sprites move quickly across the screen and the controls are very easy and responsive. Blade can move in the usual four directions and pressing 5 will make him punch or use a weapon if selected. The weapons are great, after the first level you gain Blade's gun and by the end of the game you can carry his sword as well as the lethal S-Blade. Health is also provided in the form of Blade's green syringes which are littered around the levels.

The gameplay consists of you walking/fast pacing towards the end point whilst killing everything that gets in your way. There are plenty of vampires to dispatch and if they come too close they take a good suck on your neck.

There is a map in the top left corner which displays the end point as a bright green dot. The section you are in is also displayed but the rest of the level is blackened out. Don't expect to reach the end by walking in a straight line. The levels have been designed like an Ikea showroom. You are forced to walk around in big circles and finally you will home in towards the final target. At the end of the latter levels, there is an boss fight. The boss fights are the hardest part of the game but once you learn the attack pattern and their range it is quite easy to stay out of reach and swipe them with your sword.

The only disappointing feature of the game is the sound. The sound effects are not great and whenever you attack there is some serious slowdown. This is made worse when you use the S-Blade. This weapon can thrown and acts as a vampire seeking missle. It fly around decapitating any vampires in its vicinity. With the sound on, the slowdown happens every few seconds as the S-Blade finds a new victim. I recommend you play without the sound as the game speed is then very fast.

Overall this is a good licensed game which has got a bit of meat to it and isn't just a dodgy marketing ploy.
