Back to basics with the mini games

I haven't seen the Mel Gibson film , Apocalypto, and I wonder how many severed heads make an appearance. Apocalyptos, the game (no official tie-in to the film), features a lot of floating heads and your main aim is to either collect or obliterate them. The game is a menagerie of mini games where you play the role of the executioners sweeper upper.

The Mayans practised human sacrifices at the top of their temples. The question not often asked by historians, is what happens to the heads? Sudden Games would have us believe that they are thrown down the side of the temples and some poor sod has to tidy up the mess and place them in down the well. You are that poor sod, but rather than touch the grisly items, you and your mate devise ingenious ways of disposing the body. This is al a very elaborate back story. Essentially, heads fall down from one side of the screen and you have to catch them in a trampoline and bounce them to the other side where they will eventually fall down a pit.

There are a number of unique missions, others will have you throwing spears at the heads or even a macabre volleyball style game. There are about 6 or 7 different game types spread across 40 levels. After completing the first set, the difficulty gradually ramps up with more heads and more obstacles to face. There is only one mode and you have infinite attempts to complete the levels (you need at least a 60% pass rate).

The controls are all touch based and pretty intuitive. On the whole, you need to drag your man around the screen. In some occasions, there will be two men to control and sometimes the multi-touch does fail a little. There are times when the game can get a little confused and the wrong man will move but you can still play through the game (just).

The graphics are a little simple but then this is only a 59p/99c game. For the price, you get 40 levels, some entertaining gameplay and a full OpenFeint achievement section which will require some skills to complete. It's a quirky little game that might do well in the charts.
