Smash those cubes!

Cube smashers is described as taking the most addictive elements of other colour matching games and adding an innovative 3D element. To me it felt like playing on a rubix cube.

Like all other matching games, you have to match 3 or more of the same colour. You have a 5 by 5 grid of cubes which you can select and turn once. Therefore when turning a cube you have 4 options as you can only turn it once to one of the four sides. You can just about see two of the sides colours and for the other two, either you are quick and have a look or you can try and remember which colour is usually on that side.

As usual with matching games, if you match 3 colours, any adjacent cube with the same colour will also be destroyed. This allows more cubes to drop and lets you try and set up combos or just use pot luck to see if any more matches occur. The whole time you are playing there is a timer counting down a requirement for you to achieve.

These are usually to destroy (i.e. match) a certain number of a colour. It starts off simple with requirements of 3 but later levels will require you to match maybe 8 or more of one colour. Thankfully you don't have to do this in one go, you can do it in batches as long as you finish the requirement before the timer ends. If you don't an immovable and unturnable cube gets dropped on the screen. Obviously if you keep missing requirements and get too many of these, it's game over.

So it's basically a race to keep getting the requirements and often you are just matching any colours to try and move things around a bit. There are power ups to be had if you match enough colours or get some chains going. These can rotate all the faces once or blow up a section or even get rid of one immovable block. There are even requirements to use a power up sometimes (e.g. 2 bombs) so you need to make sure you are making enough combos to get them.

2 modes are given in the game, a challenge mode where you constantly have a timer and requirements, and a time attack mode. Both modes are basically play until you stop and therefore there doesn't seem to be a limited number of levels. As you progress the action can get quite frantic and you have to think quick to stay alive.

Like all mobile games these days there are awards to be achieved as well depending on how quickly you match things, how many you destroy of a certain colour etc etc. To be honest, you can't really go for them, as the action is a bit too frantic.

Overall it's a nice matching game and slightly different with the 3D element, but nothing that amazing. It is slightly addictive, but with both modes just play until you die, you will most probably get to a certain point and not much further. I got to level 23 on challenge mode, and don't think I'll beat that.

Maybe if you're bored of your puzzle games or you really love them, you should check this out.
