Interface3 announces 'Not Lost in the Universe' - interactive stroybook project in collaboration with Ko Lik Films

Story added: 04 Jul 2012 14:18

Edinburgh film and games indies team up to create Not Lost In the Universe

Scottish mobile game specialists Interface3 today announced a partnership with independent Edinburgh film and animation studio Ko Lik Films (The Tree Officer, Haunted Hogmanay, Ooglies - showreel video). Pooling their industry-spanning expertise, the two companies are collaborating to create Not Lost In The Universe, an interactive storybook series for iPad, with the support of Creative Scotland.

As animation and film studios become more involved with digital platforms and game developers seek out innovative, refreshing ways of telling compelling stories, the Scottish partnership between Interface3 and Ko Lik Films will serve as a template of the shape of things to come in interactive storytelling. Not Lost In The Universe will showcase how multiple creative disciplines can be interwoven into quality products, demonstrating the diverse abilities of some of the best talent in Scotland's creative sector.

"Not Lost in the Universe is an exciting project which sits at the forefront of cross-platform storytelling," said Jess Connell, writer at Ko Lik. "Working with Interface3 we are able to combine award-winning game design and development with award-winning writing and animation."

A children’s storybook created with the iPad in mind, Not Lost In The Universe is designed with narrative and gameplay interwoven together. The narrative of the story acts a mechanism to teach children about science, engineering and technology, whilst the games act as a way to reinforce that knowledge. It is expected that this format will prove particularly effective in line with the science and technology topics that the series aims to inform children about.

Kate Ho, Managing Director of Interface3 said: “Very few companies achieve the right balance of education and entertainment. Our hope is that with the Not Lost project, we can use our knowledge and creative talents to produce the next-generation education storybook app.”

The first book in the Not Lost in the Universe series will be announced in Autumn 2012, with an expected release date of late November 2012.

About Not Lost in the Universe
Aimed at 4-7 year olds, the Not Lost series aims to educate children about Science, Engineering and Technology (SET), with the first book focusing on the aims of renewable energy. With funding for the first book provided by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland, the project combines the creative and design talents of independent games developer Interface3 Games and independent film and animation studio Ko Lik Films, both based in Edinburgh, Scotland.
