Now on sale for iPhone, iPad and Android mobile phones, ‘Roger the flying pig’ was created by one student in his spare time, and is now on sale worldwide.
Roger the pig got lost when he was little and couldn’t find his way home. Raised by a family of ducks, he always longed to fly… Roger must be launched down a giant slide, and balloons containing burgers and muffins popped at just the right time to feed him – the more he eats, the further he will fly!
The game was built by Maciej Czekala, a student on the Professional Masters in Games Development degree at Abertay University, a world-leading centre of excellence for producing new game talent.
Maciej said: “I really love fun, funny games and had the idea for a pig who desperately wanted to learn to fly so he can find his adopted family.
“Mobile phones are perfect for quick, fun games like this. Games like Angry Birds have been unbelievably popular because they can be played by anyone, and can be enjoyed for just a few minutes at a time.”
He added: “Angry Birds is definitely a big influence on anyone designing mobile phone games, because it’s so incredibly well made. I decided to take my own unique slant on this new genre of physics-based games, and hope it will also be a big success.
“Studying at Abertay University has made an incredible difference to my career, and I hope to stay in Dundee and set up my own company. I moved to Scotland because of Abertay – nowhere else in Europe offers the same standard of games education.”
Maciej’s tutor on the Professional Masters in Games Development, Ken Fee, said: “We’re certainly seeing a shift towards smaller, cheaper computer games, particularly on mobile phones. What Maciej has created is superb fun and really deserves to do well.
“There are huge opportunities for individuals and small companies to take advantage of this new market, with people buying games in completely different ways to just a few years ago. The iPhone in particular has been a major factor in this shift.”
He added: “Dundee, with the talented graduates coming out of Abertay University, has a fantastic chance to take advantage of this huge growth in mobile and social gaming.
“Companies like Digital Goldfish, Outplay Entertainment and Tag Games in Dundee have great ambitions to be world leaders in mobile gaming, but there’s also no reason why a big hit can’t also come from one person, building a fun, little game in their own spare time – exactly like Maciej.”
The Professional Masters in Games Development is a unique, industry-focused postgraduate course, where all the students work in project teams, exactly as if they were running a small company.
The Professional Masters students are based in the UK Centre for Excellence in Computer Games Education at Abertay University.
