On one of many frequent visits to Los Angeles, Don Diego de la Vega encounters Sergeant Garcia in a local tavern who informs him of trouble that is brewing near the San Buenaventura mission. News has spread that a gang of rogue Indians have been ransacking merchants traveling along El Camino Real (The King's Highway), and the latest incident involved a carriage that was robbed of a fortune in gold and set on fire.
